The Barastoc Tournament is an Interstate Series competition was started by the Warwick Club in conjunction with their ‘Rose Bowl’ Club Championships in 2008. It was decided that there was a need for more interstate competition. This meant that the state Queensland and New South Wales went head to head in Men’s, Women’s, Intermediate, Mixed, Juniors and Masters competition. Victoria increased the competition by competing in the Open Men’s competition on loaned horses.
This year a New Zealand team was invited to compete in the Open Men’s division creating more competition and making a win even more satisfying.
Although it is always sad to report when we do not dominate our overseas rivals I believe that the New Zealand Men’s team that travelled to Warwick, Queensland would have received some valuable lessons from their experience.
The team consisted of both players that have had many International experiences at top level polocrosse to those that were debuting at this level for the first time. The 6 men that travelled and played at the Barastoc Tournament were; Dean Gower, Shane Hill, Shaye Williams, Daryel Mouat, Jessee Kereopa and PJ Dempsey. These players were involved in 3 intense games of polocorsse over three days competing on borrowed horses. Final scores below;
